$2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle MS-64 NGC
The United States Mint produced a highly unusual gold coin series from 1908 to 1929, characterized by a revolutionary incuse design. Unlike traditional coinage where the details are raised above the surface, the features on this two and a half dollar piece are sunken directly into the metal. This distinctive artistic approach was brought to life by designer Bela Lyon Pratt, creating a flat, protected surface that preserves the intricate details of the engraving. On the obverse, a Native American figure wearing a traditional feathered headdress faces left, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The word LIBERTY is inscribed above, with the date of issue positioned below the portrait. This side showcases the unique sunken relief that defines the series. The reverse presents a proud bald eagle standing on a bundle of arrows, which is wrapped in an olive branch. The inscriptions include the issuing nation, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, alongside the traditional mottos E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST. The denomination is clearly marked as 2 1/2 DOLLARS. Minted in Philadelphia and Denver, these coins contain 0.12094 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900. This specific specimen has survived in exceptional quality, certified in Mint State 64 (MS-64).
