The United States $2.50 gold quarter eagle, produced from 1908 to 1929, stands out as a remarkable departure from traditional coinage methods. Created by artist Bela Lyon Pratt, this series is famous for its incuse design, meaning the details and inscriptions are sunken below the flat surface of the coin rather than raised above it. This unusual technique gives the coin a distinctively modern, tactile quality. On the obverse, the coin displays a profile of Liberty wearing a traditional feathered headdress. Thirteen stars encircle this central figure, representing the original colonies, with the word "LIBERTY" positioned above and the year of issue below. The initials of the designer, "BLP", are also subtly visible on this side. The reverse of the coin is dedicated to a majestic bald eagle standing proudly. Surrounding the national bird are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST". The face value of two and a half dollars is also clearly marked. These gold pieces were struck at either the Philadelphia or Denver mints, containing 0.12094 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 90 percent.
