The United States Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle is a classic representation of nineteenth-century American coinage. Minted between the years 1840 and 1907, this coin carries a face value of 2.50 dollars and is composed of 0.900 fine gold, containing 0.12094 troy ounces of the precious metal. These historic pieces were struck at various branches of the United States Mint, including Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco. Some surviving examples of this long-running series show signs of their journey through time, such as cleaning or evidence of having been used in jewelry. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a hair band inscribed with the word LIBERTY, and her profile is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original American colonies. On the reverse, a detailed heraldic eagle clutches an olive branch and arrows, its breast protected by a shield. The eagle is surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the abbreviated denomination, 2 1/2 D.
