This United States gold piece carries a face value of two and a half dollars and contains 0.12094 troy ounces of gold. Struck by the United States Mint between the years 1840 and 1907, these coins were produced at various branch mints, including Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco. This particular specimen has been certified in Choice Mint State 63 condition. The front of the coin displays a left-facing portrait of Liberty, who wears a band inscribed with her own name. A ring of thirteen stars encircles her image. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with a shield across its chest, clutching an olive branch and arrows. The eagle is surrounded by the country of origin, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination of the coin. The design was originally created by Christian Gobrecht.
