Introduced in 1840 and struck until 1907, this United States gold coin represents a classic era of American coinage. The design is the work of Christian Gobrecht, featuring a left-facing portrait of Liberty on the obverse. She wears a hair band inscribed with the word LIBERTY, and thirteen stars encircle her profile to represent the original colonies. The reverse displays a powerful heraldic eagle with a shield draped across its chest. The bird holds the traditional symbols of national strength while surrounded by the legend United States of America and the face value of two and a half dollars. These coins were produced at several different facilities, including Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco. Struck with a gold purity of 90 percent, each piece contains 0.12094 troy ounces of precious metal. This specimen is certified in Mint State 65 condition, indicating a highly preserved state that allows the fine details of Gobrecht's engraving to be appreciated just as they appeared when leaving the mint.
