$20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-61 PCGS (1800s S-Mint)

0.9675 troy oz .900 MS-61 (PCGS)

During the nineteenth century, the United States Mint produced a massive gold coin that became a cornerstone of domestic and international commerce. This twenty dollar denomination, containing 0.9675 troy ounces of gold, represents a significant era in American coinage. The specific example highlighted here was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the 1800s and has survived in remarkable condition, receiving a certified grade of Mint State 61. The visual presentation of this coin is the work of designer James B. Longacre, whose artistry defined this denomination from 1850 to 1907. On the obverse, the profile of Miss Liberty is depicted wearing a crown decorated with pearls, which clearly displays the inscription LIBERTY. Surrounding her portrait are stars representing the nation's early states. On the reverse, Longacre placed a heraldic eagle with its wings fully extended, bearing a protective shield upon its chest. Above the eagle, an oval of thirteen stars is illuminated by stylized rays. The outer edge is inscribed with United States of America and the denomination, Twenty Dollars. As a coin graded MS-61, it displays the expected contact marks and minor abrasions associated with its journey through the minting and handling process, yet it retains its original mint luster and historical character.
