$20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-61 PCGS/NGC (Pre-1900)

0.9675 troy oz .900 MS-61 (PCGS)

Introduced in the mid nineteenth century, the twenty dollar denomination represents one of the most substantial gold coins ever struck for circulation by the United States. Minted between the years 1850 and 1907, these impressive pieces contain 0.9675 troy ounces of gold, alloyed to a purity of 0.900. This specific group highlights examples struck before the turn of the twentieth century, carrying the distinct character of nineteenth-century American coinage. The design, created by James B. Longacre, presents a classic representation of Lady Liberty on the obverse. Her left-facing profile is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies. On the reverse, Longacre depicted a heraldic eagle with wings fully spread, bearing a protective shield upon its breast. Above the eagle, an oval of thirteen stars is surrounded by radiant rays. The reverse is also inscribed with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TWENTY DOLLARS. These historic coins were produced at various United States Mint locations, including Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New Orleans. Surviving in remarkable condition, these specimens have been certified in Mint State 61 (MS-61) condition, preserving the intricate details of Longacre's original engraving for modern observers to appreciate.
