Introduced in the mid nineteenth century, the twenty dollar gold piece represents a monumental era in American coinage. Minted between 1850 and 1907, these impressive coins contain 0.9675 troy ounces of gold. They were produced across several historic mint locations, including Philadelphia, San Francisco, Carson City, Denver, and New Orleans. Because the federal government recalled and melted down pre 1933 gold coins, surviving specimens are highly prized historical survivors. The design, crafted by James B. Longacre, features a left-facing portrait of Liberty on the obverse, her hair bound by a band inscribed with her name, surrounded by thirteen stars. The reverse displays a detailed heraldic eagle bearing a shield, beneath a canopy of stars. Over its half-century of production, the coin underwent key design shifts. The earliest versions, known as Type I (produced from 1850 to 1866), do not feature a religious motto. Starting in 1866, Type II coins introduced the phrase "In God We Trust" above the eagle, while Type III coins, beginning in 1877, updated the reverse to spell out the denomination as "TWENTY DOLLARS" rather than using abbreviations. This specific coin is certified in Mint State 62 (MS-62) condition, preserving the intricate details of Longacre's original engraving.
