$20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-62 NGC (Random)

0.9675 troy oz .900 MS-62 (NGC)

During an era when precious metal circulated directly as money, the United States Mint struck the twenty-dollar gold piece for daily commerce. Minted from 1850 to 1907, these impressive coins contain 0.9675 troy ounces of pure gold. They were produced at various federal mint facilities, including those in Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, before the nation officially abandoned the gold standard in 1933. The front of the coin showcases a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty, her hair secured by a pearl-adorned crown that displays the word "Liberty." The year of manufacture is positioned directly beneath her portrait. On the back, the design draws inspiration from the Great Seal of the United States, surrounded by the words "United States of America" along the top rim and the face value, "Twenty Dollars," along the bottom. Designed by James Barton Longacre, these double eagles represent a bygone era of American coinage. In the 1930s, the federal government recalled circulating gold and ordered its melting, making surviving specimens, such as those certified in Mint State 62 (MS-62) condition, highly intriguing survivors of early American monetary history.
