In the nineteenth century, the United States Mint introduced a massive gold coin to facilitate commerce: the twenty dollar double eagle. This specific issue represents the pre-1900 era of the series, preserved in certified Mint State 62 condition. Designed by James B. Longacre, the coin features a classic representation of Lady Liberty on the obverse. Her profile is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies. The reverse showcases a heraldic eagle with its wings fully spread, bearing a shield upon its breast. Above the eagle, thirteen stars are arranged in an oval format surrounded by rays, creating a striking celestial canopy. These historic coins were struck at various United States Mint facilities, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco.
