The twenty-dollar gold piece, often called the Double Eagle, represents a classic era in American coinage. Produced between 1850 and 1907, these impressive coins contain 0.9675 troy ounces of gold, struck with a purity of 0.900. Designed by James B. Longacre, the coin features a left-facing portrait of Liberty on the obverse, her hair bound by a band inscribed with her name, surrounded by a ring of thirteen stars. The reverse displays a detailed heraldic eagle protecting a shield on its chest, positioned beneath a cluster of thirteen stars. Over its fifty-seven years of production, the coin underwent subtle design changes that help identify different eras. The earliest versions, known as Type I (minted from 1850 to 1866), do not feature the motto "In God We Trust". This phrase was added to the reverse starting in 1866, marking the transition to Type II. Later, in 1877, the Type III design emerged, which spelled out the denomination fully as "TWENTY DOLLARS" instead of using earlier abbreviations. These pieces were struck at various mint facilities across the country, including Philadelphia, Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco. These surviving specimens are particularly remarkable because of their historical scarcity. In 1933, the United States government enacted a ban on private gold ownership, which led to the vast majority of these pre-1933 gold coins being returned to the U.S. Treasury and melted down. The few that escaped destruction are highly prized today, especially when preserved in exceptional condition. This particular coin has been certified in Mint State 63 (MS-63) condition, representing a beautiful survivor of a bygone era in American monetary history.
