$20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-64 PCGS (Random)

0.9675 troy oz .900 MS-64 (PCGS)

Introduced in the middle of the nineteenth century, the twenty-dollar gold piece represents a fascinating chapter in American monetary history. Designed by James Longacre and first minted in 1850, this impressive coin circulated widely during a period when precious metal backed the nation's physical currency. Each piece contains 0.9675 troy ounces of pure gold, blended with a copper alloy to ensure the coin could withstand the friction of daily commerce. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair secured by a band displaying her name, surrounded by thirteen stars. On the reverse, a detailed heraldic eagle shields its chest beneath a canopy of thirteen stars, flanked by the national name and the twenty-dollar denomination. These coins were produced continuously until 1907, serving as a cornerstone of domestic and international trade. The survival of these gold pieces is remarkable given the dramatic monetary shifts of the 1930s. In 1933, the United States officially abandoned the gold standard, ending the production of gold coinage for circulation. The government ordered citizens to return their gold coins, resulting in the melting of vast quantities of these historic issues. This certified Mint State 64 specimen offers a direct connection to this lost era of American currency, preserved in exceptional condition.
