Introduced in the mid nineteenth century, the twenty-dollar gold piece represents a monumental era in American coinage. Minted between 1850 and 1907, these impressive coins contain 0.9675 troy ounces of pure gold. They circulated widely across the nation, struck at various United States mint facilities including Philadelphia, Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco. This particular piece survives in Very Fine condition, showing clear design details alongside the honest wear of historical circulation. The artistry of James B. Longacre shines on both sides of the coin. The front features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band inscribed with her name, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. On the back, a majestic heraldic eagle guards a shield on its chest, beneath a canopy of thirteen stars. The reverse also displays the issuing nation and the twenty-dollar denomination. These coins carry a dramatic history of survival. In 1933, the United States officially departed from the gold standard, leading to the widespread melting of circulating gold coinage. Because so many of these issues were destroyed during the 1930s, surviving specimens offer a direct, tangible connection to America's early monetary system.
