$20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle XF (Random Year)
The twenty-dollar gold piece, often called the Double Eagle, represents a fascinating era in American currency. Minted between 1850 and 1907, these impressive coins contain 0.9675 troy ounces of pure gold. They were produced across five different United States minting facilities, including Philadelphia, Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco. On the front of the coin, a left-facing portrait of Liberty is crowned with a hair band bearing her name, encircled by thirteen stars. The reverse side features a detailed heraldic eagle clutching a shield against its chest. Above the eagle, thirteen stars form a halo, surrounded by the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination, TWENTY DOLLARS. The design was originally created by James B. Longacre. These particular coins survived a major turning point in monetary history. In 1933, the United States officially abandoned the gold standard. During this period, the federal government mandated that citizens return their gold coins, leading to the destruction of vast, unrecorded quantities of these pieces, which were melted down into bars. Surviving specimens in Extra Fine condition offer a direct connection to this bygone era of circulating precious metal currency.
