The Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful coins ever produced by the United States. Struck from 1907 to 1933, this twenty-dollar denomination contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900. Its design is a masterpiece of American numismatic art, featuring a dynamic obverse of Lady Liberty striding forward, bathed in the rays of a rising sun. The reverse captures a majestic bald eagle soaring through the sky, accompanied by the inscriptions "United States of America" and "Twenty Dollars." Along the edge of the coin, the phrase "E Pluribus Unum" is elegantly divided by stars. Throughout its production run, which took place at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints, the coin underwent subtle design changes. For instance, the earliest issues from 1907 to 1908 do not carry the motto "In God We Trust," while the pieces struck in 1912 feature forty-eight stars on the obverse to reflect the states of the Union at that time. This series carries a poignant historical legacy. In 1933, the United States Treasury recalled these pre-1933 gold coins, melting the vast majority of them down into gold bars. The surviving specimens, including those certified in Mint State 64 (MS-64), offer a rare, tangible link to an era of American coinage that was suddenly and permanently brought to an end.
