The year 2000 marked a milestone entry for the United States Mint's premier bullion series, presenting a stunning combination of historical tribute and contemporary artistry. Struck in one ounce of fine gold at the West Point facility in New York, this fifty-dollar legal tender piece carries a purity of 0.9167. Its physical presence is matched by the deep-seated national imagery captured on both of its faces. On the obverse, the design looks back to a classic era of American coinage. It features a modern adaptation of the celebrated figure of Lady Liberty originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the early twentieth-century double eagle. Liberty is depicted in a powerful forward stride, holding a lit torch in one hand to represent enlightenment and an olive branch in the other as a symbol of peace. The year 2000 is clearly inscribed alongside this iconic figure. The reverse side introduces a different narrative of American heritage, featuring a detailed family scene of the national bird. Designed by Miley Busiek, this side portrays a male bald eagle mid-flight, carrying an olive branch back to a nest. Inside the nest, a female eagle and their young await his return. This side of the coin also displays the traditional national mottos, "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM", alongside the weight and face value inscriptions.
