The year 2000 marked the continuation of a celebrated numismatic journey across America, bringing with it the eighth release in the historic 50 State Quarters Program. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this brilliant uncirculated quarter dollar celebrates the rich natural heritage of South Carolina with a detailed, multi-layered design on its reverse. On the reverse, the coin displays a detailed outline of the state of South Carolina. Rising from the center is a majestic Palmetto tree, flanked by a Carolina Wren and a Yellow Jessamine, which are the state bird and state flower. A single star is placed on the map to mark the location of Columbia, the state capital. The inscription 'The Palmetto State' arches proudly alongside the statehood year of 1788 and the coin's release year of 2000. The obverse features the familiar profile of George Washington, a design originally created by John Flanagan. This side bears the traditional national mottos, including 'In God We Trust' and 'Liberty', alongside the 'P' mint mark indicating its origin in Philadelphia.
