The year 2000 marked the release of the tenth entry in the United States Mint's celebrated 50 State Quarters Program, representing the Commonwealth of Virginia. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this twenty-five cent coin is composed of a copper-nickel outer layer bonded to a core of pure copper. It remains a fascinating specimen for those exploring the evolution of American coinage designs. The obverse of the quarter displays the traditional profile of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan. Alongside the portrait of the nation's first president, the classic inscriptions of liberty, the national motto, and the quarter dollar denomination are clearly legible. On the reverse, designed by Edgar Z. Steever, the coin commemorates the quadricentennial of the Jamestown settlement.
