2000-S Maryland State Quarter Gem Proof

In 2000, the United States Mint continued its celebrated 50 State Quarters Program with a tribute to Maryland. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this specific coin is a brilliant proof specimen, showcasing the incredible contrast and sharp details characteristic of specialized proof manufacturing. The coin is composed of a copper and nickel outer layer bonded securely to a core of pure copper. The reverse side of the quarter highlights the Maryland Statehouse, a historic structure elegantly framed by clusters of white oak leaves. Inscriptions on this side include the state name, the year 1788, the nickname THE OLD LINE STATE, and the traditional national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. This side also notes the year of release, 2000. On the obverse, the familiar profile of George Washington faces left. This side bears the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR. The small S mint mark is also visible, indicating its origin in San Francisco. The design of this side was created through the collaborative efforts of John Flanagan and William Cousins.
