The year 2000 marked the continuation of a celebrated numismatic journey with the release of the Massachusetts state quarter, the sixth entry in the United States Mint's 50 State Quarters Program. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this particular edition is crafted from 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of the precious metal. The proof finish highlights the sharp details and contrasting surfaces of a carefully prepared planchet. On the obverse, the familiar portrait of George Washington is presented in profile, a design originally created by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins. Surrounding the first president's likeness are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "QUARTER DOLLAR," alongside the "S" mint mark indicating its San Francisco origin. The reverse side, designed by Thomas D. Rogers, pays tribute to the rich heritage of "The Bay State." It features the historic Minuteman of the American Revolution standing proudly in front of an outlined map of Massachusetts. Along with the state's nickname, the reverse displays the year of admission, the year of coinage, and the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
