Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this 2000 dated quarter dollar represents the eighth entry in the celebrated 50 State Quarters Program. The coin is struck in a proof format, featuring a composition of copper and nickel bonded to a core of pure copper. The pristine surfaces highlight the contrasting textures and sharp details of the dual designs. The front of the coin displays a classic profile of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan. Alongside the portrait, the traditional mottoes of the United States are clearly visible, accompanied by the S mint mark indicating its origin in San Francisco. On the reverse, designed by Thomas D. Rogers, the coin celebrates the natural heritage of South Carolina. The design incorporates a detailed outline of the state, with a star marking the location of Columbia, the state capital. Dominating the center is a palmetto tree, flanked by a Carolina wren and yellow jessamine. The state nickname, The Palmetto State, is inscribed alongside the statehood year of 1788 and the release year of 2000.
