In 2000, the United States Mint continued its celebrated 50 State Quarters Program with the eighth release in the series, honoring South Carolina. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this proof edition is crafted from 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of the precious metal. The coin showcases a brilliant, mirror-like finish characteristic of specialized proof strikes, highlighting the intricate details of the engraving. The obverse presents the familiar left-facing profile of George Washington, a design originally created by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins. Legible inscriptions on this side include the words LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR and the S mint mark below the portrait, indicating its origin in San Francisco. The reverse side celebrates the natural symbols of South Carolina. An outline of the state serves as the backdrop for a Palmetto tree, a Carolina Wren, and a Yellow Jessamine. A single star is placed on the map to mark the location of Columbia, the state capital. The reverse also bears the state's nickname, THE PALMETTO STATE, the year of its admission to the Union (1788), the year of issue (2000), and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM.
