In 2001, the United States Mint revisited one of its most celebrated numismatic designs to create a striking commemorative silver dollar. Minted in Denver, this coin is struck from 90 percent silver, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of the precious metal. With a mintage of 227,131 pieces, this Brilliant Uncirculated release captures a beloved aesthetic from the early twentieth century, translating it onto a larger silver canvas. The obverse features a powerful profile of a Native American chief, a design originally modeled by James Earle Fraser using three different living subjects. This imagery first gained fame on the circulating five-cent pieces issued from 1913 to 1938. The word LIBERTY is inscribed along the upper right rim, accompanied by the year 2001 and the letter F, which honors the original designer. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is positioned below the chin. On the reverse, a massive American bison stands in profile, inspired by Black Diamond, a famous resident of the Central Park Zoo in New York. The legendary beast is accompanied by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The face value of ONE DOLLAR is clearly displayed at the bottom, alongside the D mint mark, indicating its origin at the Denver Mint facility.
