2001-D Buffalo $1 Silver Commem MS-70 NGC

0.7734 troy oz .900 2001 NGC

In 2001, the Denver Mint struck a remarkable silver commemorative dollar that pays homage to one of the most celebrated designs in American numismatic history. Containing 0.7734 ounces of silver, this coin revives an iconic aesthetic originally featured on Buffalo nickels from 1913 to 1938. The obverse presents a powerful composite portrait created by blending the distinct features of three different Native American chiefs. This side of the coin also bears the inscription "LIBERTY" alongside the traditional motto "IN GOD WE TRUST." On the reverse, a majestic bison dominates the design. The inspiration for this image was a real bison named Black Diamond, who lived in the early twentieth century. Surrounding the animal are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the face value, "ONE DOLLAR." This particular specimen is certified in pristine Mint State 70 condition, highlighting the exceptional detail of both the portrait and the wildlife illustration.
