In 2001, the United States Mint released a commemorative silver dollar that pays tribute to one of the most celebrated designs in American numismatic history. Struck at the Denver Mint, this modern coin contains 0.7734 ounces of silver and revives the classic imagery originally created by James Earle Fraser for the circulating five-cent piece from 1913 to 1938. The obverse of the coin presents a powerful composite portrait of a Native American chieftain, created by blending the distinct features of three different individuals. The word LIBERTY is inscribed along the upper right rim, with the year 2001 positioned below the portrait. On the reverse, a massive American bison stands in profile, a design modeled after a real-life animal named Black Diamond. This side of the coin features a rich array of traditional inscriptions, including UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination of ONE DOLLAR, alongside the D mintmark representing its Denver origin.
