In 2001, the United States Mint continued its celebrated series honoring each state with the release of the Kentucky quarter, the fifteenth design issued in the landmark program. This particular coin, struck at the Denver Mint, displays a brilliant uncirculated finish that highlights the intricate details of its dual-sided artwork. The reverse side, designed by T. James Ferrell, celebrates the heritage of the Bluegrass State. It features a majestic thoroughbred racehorse standing behind a wooden fence in the foreground, while the historic Federal Hill mansion rises in the background. Legible inscriptions on this side include the state name, the year of statehood (1792), the commemorative year of 2001, and the famous phrase "My Old Kentucky Home." On the obverse, the familiar profile of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan, graces the coin. This side carries the traditional inscriptions "United States of America," "Liberty," "In God We Trust," and the denomination "Quarter Dollar." A small "D" mint mark is clearly visible, denoting its origin from the Denver facility. Structurally, the coin is composed of a copper and nickel outer layer bonded to a core of pure copper.
