In 2001, the United States Mint celebrated New York with a special quarter design struck at the Denver facility. This coin, preserved in brilliant uncirculated condition, features a copper and nickel composition bonded to a core of pure copper. It represents a modern chapter in American coinage, capturing the unique identity of the Empire State on a circulating canvas. The reverse of the coin showcases a detailed rendering of the Statue of Liberty superimposed over an outline of the state itself. Eleven stars trace the border, symbolizing New York's position as the eleventh state to join the Union. Accompanying the imagery is the inscription "GATEWAY TO FREEDOM," alongside the state's name, the year 1788 to mark its entry into statehood, and the year of coinage, 2001. The traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is also clearly visible. On the obverse, the familiar portrait of George Washington faces left, a classic design originally created by John Flanagan. Surrounding the first president are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR." The small "D" mint mark signifies its origin from the Denver Mint, making this coin a fascinating study in regional pride and national iconography.
