In 2001, the United States Mint continued its celebrated series honoring each state with the release of the North Carolina quarter. This particular coin, struck at the Denver Mint and preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, represents the tenth entry in the landmark fifty-state program. Composed of a copper and nickel outer layer bonded to a core of pure copper, the coin displays a bright, satin-like luster that highlights its detailed engraving. The obverse features the classic left-facing portrait of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan. Alongside the first president's likeness, the inscriptions read LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the denomination of QUARTER DOLLAR and the distinctive D mint mark indicating its Denver origin. On the reverse, designed by John Mercanti, the coin commemorates a historic leap in human technology. The design depicts the famous first powered flight taking off at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. This side of the coin bears the inscriptions NORTH CAROLINA and the year 1789, marking the state's admission to the Union, along with the phrase FIRST FLIGHT, the year of issue 2001, and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM.
