In 2001, the Philadelphia Mint struck the fifteenth entry in the celebrated 50 State Quarters Program, honoring the state of Kentucky. This particular issue is preserved in brilliant uncirculated condition, showcasing the dual-metal composition of a copper and nickel outer layer bonded to a core of pure copper. The obverse displays the familiar profile of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan. Alongside the portrait, the traditional inscriptions of liberty and the national motto are clearly visible, accompanied by the P mint mark representing the Philadelphia facility. On the reverse, designed by T. James Ferrell, the coin celebrates Kentucky heritage. The design features a thoroughbred racehorse standing behind a wooden fence in the foreground, with the historic Federal Hill mansion rising in the background. The inscriptions include the state name, the year of statehood (1792), the year of issue (2001), and the title of the famous song associated with the state, "My Old Kentucky Home."
