In 2001, the United States Mint continued its popular commemorative series with a tribute to the Empire State. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this twenty-five cent piece features a composition of copper and nickel bonded to an inner core of pure copper. The coin remains in brilliant uncirculated condition, preserving the sharp details of its dual-sided artistry. The front of the coin displays the classic left-facing portrait of George Washington, originally created by sculptor John Flanagan. Surrounding the first president are the familiar inscriptions of liberty and trust that characterize American coinage, alongside the Philadelphia mint mark. On the reverse, artist Alfred Maletsky captured the spirit of New York with a design titled Gateway to Freedom. The imagery features the iconic Statue of Liberty superimposed over an outline of the state's borders. Eleven stars trace the edge, representing New York's status as the eleventh state to ratify the Constitution. The reverse also bears the state's admission year of 1788 and the national motto, E Pluribus Unum.
