In 2001, the United States Mint released the tenth coin in its celebrated 50 State Quarters Program, honoring the state of North Carolina. This particular specimen, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, features a brilliant uncirculated finish. Crafted from a copper and nickel blend bonded to a core of pure copper, the coin showcases the artistry of two distinct designers on its two sides. The obverse displays John Flanagan's classic profile of George Washington, a familiar image accompanied by the inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR. The Philadelphia origin is marked by the P mint mark on this side. On the reverse, designed by John Mercanti, the coin commemorates a monumental moment in aviation history. The design depicts the famous first flight at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Along with the state name and the year 1789, the reverse bears the inscription FIRST FLIGHT, the year of issue 2001, and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM.
