In 2001, the United States Mint continued its celebrated fifty-state commemorative initiative with a special silver release honoring the state of Kentucky. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal. Its mirror-like proof finish highlights the intricate details of a design that captures the spirit of the Bluegrass State. The obverse features the familiar profile of George Washington, a classic portrait originally fashioned by John Flanagan and later modified by William Cousins. Alongside the first president, the inscriptions read LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, accompanied by the S mint mark indicating its San Francisco origin. On the reverse, designed by T. James Ferrell, a narrative scene unfolds. A majestic thoroughbred racehorse stands behind a wooden fence in the foreground, while the historic Federal Hill mansion rises in the background. The design is framed by the state name, the year of statehood (1792), and the year of release (2001). The inscription "MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME" pays tribute to the famous melody associated with the state, while the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM completes the design.
