In 2001, the United States Mint continued its celebrated 50 State Quarters Program with the release of the tenth overall coin in the series, honoring the state of North Carolina. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this particular issue is a proof edition crafted from 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of the precious metal. The obverse of the quarter displays the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington, a design originally created by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins. Surrounding the president's profile are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR." The small "S" mint mark is also visible, indicating its origin in San Francisco. On the reverse, the coin commemorates a monumental moment in aviation history with a depiction of the Wright brothers' historic first flight. The design captures the early aircraft aloft, accompanied by the inscription "FIRST FLIGHT." Above the central image, the state's name, "NORTH CAROLINA," is paired with the year "1789," marking its admission to the Union. Below the scene, the coin bears the release year "2001" and the traditional national motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
