In 2001, the United States Mint continued its celebrated 50 State Quarters Program with the release of the eighth coin in the series, honoring the state of North Carolina. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this particular issue is a Gem Proof specimen, showcasing the high-quality craftsmanship and mirrored finishes characteristic of proof coinage. The coin is composed of a copper and nickel outer layer bonded to a core of pure copper. The obverse features the familiar profile of George Washington, accompanied by the inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. On the reverse, the design commemorates a monumental milestone in human history: the Wright brothers conducting their historic first flight. This side is inscribed with the state name, NORTH CAROLINA, the year of its statehood, 1789, the year of release, 2001, and the national motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM, alongside the words FIRST FLIGHT.
