In 2001, the United States Mint continued its celebrated fifty-state commemorative initiative with the eighth release in the series, honoring North Carolina. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this particular specimen achieved the highest possible grading tier, certified as a perfect proof with deep contrast between the frosted details and the mirror-like background fields. The obverse features the classic profile of George Washington, a design originally created by John Flanagan. Alongside the president's portrait, the inscriptions denote the national motto, the word liberty, and the quarter dollar denomination, accompanied by the distinctive S mint mark. On the reverse, designed by Thomas D. Rogers, the coin pays tribute to a monumental moment in human history. The imagery depicts the Wright brothers during their historic initial flight at Kitty Hawk. This side of the coin is inscribed with the state's name, the year 1789 to mark its entry into the Union, the phrase First Flight, and the national motto, E Pluribus Unum, alongside the year of issue, 2001. Structurally, the coin is composed of a copper and nickel outer layer bonded to a core of pure copper.
