In 2001, the United States Mint continued its celebrated 50 State Quarters Program with this elegant silver release, marking the thirteenth design in the historic series. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of the precious metal. The proof finish highlights the intricate details of the engraving with a brilliant, mirror-like quality. The obverse displays the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington, originally modeled by John Flanagan and updated by William Cousins. Surrounding the profile are the inscriptions for the United States of America, Liberty, In God We Trust, and the quarter dollar denomination, along with the distinct 'S' mint mark. On the reverse, designed by Thomas D. Rogers, the coin honors the Ocean State. The artwork depicts a traditional sailboat navigating the waters of Narragansett Bay with the Claiborne Pell Bridge stretching across the background. Alongside the imagery, the reverse bears the state name, its 1790 entry date into the Union, the nickname 'The Ocean State', and the traditional national motto, E Pluribus Unum, dated 2001.
