The 2001-S Rhode Island quarter represents the thirteenth release in the celebrated 50 State Quarters Program. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this particular issue is a Gem Proof specimen, showcasing the high-contrast finishes and sharp details characteristic of the mint's finest craftsmanship. The coin is composed of a copper-nickel outer layer bonded to a core of pure copper. The reverse of the coin honors the maritime heritage of the Ocean State, featuring a vintage sailboat gliding through the waters of Narragansett Bay. In the background, the Pell Bridge spans the horizon, symbolizing the connection between the state's islands and the mainland. Inscriptions on this side include the state's name, its year of statehood (1790), the nickname "THE OCEAN STATE," and the national motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" alongside the 2001 release date. On the obverse, a classic profile of George Washington is displayed, a design originally created by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins. Surrounding the portrait are the familiar inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "LIBERTY," and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR." The "S" mint mark is also clearly visible, identifying its origin from the San Francisco facility.
