2001-S Vermont State Quarter Gem Proof

0.0000 troy oz 2001 Gem Proof

In 2001, the United States Mint celebrated the Green Mountain State with a special entry in the popular State Quarter series. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this particular coin is a Gem Proof issue, meaning it was crafted with polished dies and blanks to produce a sharp, mirror-like finish that highlights the intricate details of the design. The reverse side of the coin honors the traditions and natural beauty of Vermont. It depicts two maple trees fitted with sap buckets, set against the backdrop of Camel's Hump Mountain. The scene is accompanied by the state name, the year of its admission to the Union (1791), and the official state motto, "Freedom and Unity." This side was designed by T. James Ferrell, whose initials are visible in the design. On the obverse, the coin features the classic portrait of George Washington in profile, originally designed by John Flanagan. Surrounding the first president are the inscriptions "United States of America," "Liberty," "In God We Trust," and "Quarter Dollar." The "S" mint mark is also present, indicating its origin in San Francisco. Structurally, the coin is composed of a copper-nickel outer layer bonded to a core of pure copper.
