In 2002, the United States Mint celebrated Indiana with a vibrant quarter design that captures the energetic spirit of the Hoosier State. Struck at the Denver Mint and preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, this copper-nickel clad coin highlights the state's famous identity as the Crossroads of America. The reverse imagery features a sleek racecar layered over an outline of the state, a nod to Indiana's deep-rooted automotive racing heritage. Nineteen stars surround the central state outline on the reverse side. This specific number is highly intentional, representing Indiana's place as the nineteenth state to be admitted to the Union. The inscriptions on this side include the state name, the year 1816 to mark its statehood, the phrase CROSSROADS OF AMERICA, and the traditional national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM alongside the year of issue, 2002. The obverse of the quarter displays the familiar left-facing portrait of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan and modified by William Cousins. Surrounding the first president's profile are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR. A small D mint mark is also visible, indicating its production at the Denver facility.
