In 2002, the United States Mint continued its popular circulating commemorative series with a tribute to Mississippi. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this particular quarter dollar features a brilliant uncirculated finish, highlighting the crisp details of both its obverse and reverse designs. The coin is composed of a copper and nickel outer layer bonded to a core of pure copper. The reverse of the coin features a design by Donna Weaver, capturing the essence of the state's nickname, "The Magnolia State." It showcases the elegant blossoms and leaves of the magnolia tree, a symbol deeply associated with Mississippi. The inscriptions on this side read "MISSISSIPPI," "The Magnolia State," and the year "2002," alongside the traditional national motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM." On the obverse, the coin displays the classic profile of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan.
