In 2002, the United States Mint continued its popular circulating commemorative series with the sixteenth release overall, honoring the state of Tennessee. This particular coin, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. It features a specialized copper and nickel composition bonded directly to a core of pure copper, showcasing the technical metalwork of modern American coinage. The obverse displays the familiar profile of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan. Alongside the portrait, the traditional inscriptions of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR are clearly legible, accompanied by the P mint mark representing Philadelphia. On the reverse, designer Donna Weaver celebrates the state's deep cultural roots with a tribute to the musical heritage of Tennessee. The design artfully depicts a fiddle, a trumpet, and an acoustic guitar, representing the diverse musical traditions that flourished there. The reverse also bears the state's name, the year 1796 to mark its admission to the Union, the phrase MUSICAL HERITAGE, and the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM alongside the year of issue, 2002.
