Struck at the Denver Mint in 2003, this twenty-five cent coin celebrates the state of Missouri with a design rich in American exploration. The copper-nickel clad composition, which features a core of pure copper bonded to outer layers of copper and nickel, displays a brilliant uncirculated finish that highlights the sharp details of both sides. On the obverse, a classic profile of George Washington faces left, accompanied by the traditional inscriptions of liberty and national trust. A small letter D below the portrait indicates its origin at the Denver facility. The reverse side captures a pivotal moment in American history, depicting the famous return of the Lewis and Clark expedition down the Mississippi River toward St. Louis. In the background, the iconic Gateway Arch of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial rises behind the travelers. This side is inscribed with the state name, the year of its statehood (1821), and the phrase Corps of Discovery, alongside the dates 1804 and 2004 to mark the bicentennial of the historic journey.
