The 2003 Philadelphia Mint issue of the Illinois State Quarter offers a visual journey through the diverse landscape and history of the Prairie State. Struck with a copper and nickel outer layer bonded to a pure copper core, this brilliant uncirculated coin captures a transition from agricultural heritage to modern urban life. On the reverse side, designed by Donna Weaver, the state of Illinois is outlined with a young Abraham Lincoln standing at its center. This central figure is flanked by a traditional farm scene on one side and the distinctive Chicago skyline on the other, symbolizing the state's evolution. The inscriptions include the state name, the entry year of 1818, the famous moniker "Land of Lincoln," and the phrase "21st Century State." The obverse features John Flanagan's classic portrait of George Washington, used since 1932. This side bears the traditional American inscriptions, including "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the denomination of "QUARTER DOLLAR." The small "P" mint mark indicates its production at the Philadelphia Mint.
