This 2003 quarter from the Philadelphia Mint celebrates the state of Missouri with a detailed design honoring exploration and expansion. Struck in brilliant uncirculated condition, the coin features a composition of copper and nickel bonded to a core of pure copper. The reverse side captures a pivotal moment in American history, depicting the return of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to St. Louis along the Mississippi River. Rising in the background is the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Gateway Arch. Inscriptions on this side include the state name, the year of its statehood (1821), the phrase CORPS OF DISCOVERY, the years 1804 and 2004, and the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. On the obverse, the familiar profile of George Washington faces left. This side bears the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR, alongside the P mint mark representing the Philadelphia facility.
