In 2003, the United States Mint celebrated the state of Arkansas with a special entry in the popular State Quarter series. This particular coin is a Gem Proof specimen struck at the San Francisco Mint, showcasing the high-contrast finishes and sharp details characteristic of proof coinage. Rather than precious metal, this issue is composed of a copper and nickel outer layer bonded to a core of pure copper. The reverse of the coin features a rich compilation of state symbols. A mallard duck is depicted in mid-flight above a serene lake, while stalks of rice rise from the water. Positioned prominently in the center is a polished diamond, a nod to the unique natural resources of the state. These elements are framed by the inscriptions ARKANSAS and 1836, the year of statehood, alongside the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and the year of release, 2003. On the obverse, the traditional profile of George Washington faces left, accompanied by the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST.
