Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this 2003 silver quarter honors the state of Maine with a design that captures the rugged beauty of the American coastline. The coin is minted in 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of the precious metal. Crafted to proof standards, its polished surfaces highlight the detailed artistry of both the front and back designs. The obverse displays the familiar left-facing profile of George Washington, originally modeled by John Flanagan and later modified by William Cousins. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR, along with the S mint mark signifying its origin in San Francisco. On the reverse, artist Donna Weaver brings a classic maritime scene to life. The design features the historic Pemaquid Point lighthouse perched atop a rocky granite shore, with a small sailboat navigating the open waters nearby. The state name MAINE and its year of admission to the Union, 1820, are inscribed at the top, while the year of issue, 2003, and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM anchor the bottom of this evocative design.
