In 2003, the United States Mint celebrated the natural beauty of New England with a special quarter honoring the state of Maine. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this coin features a Gem Proof finish, a manufacturing process that produces sharp details and mirror-like surfaces. The composition of the coin consists of a outer layer of copper and nickel bonded to a core of pure copper. The reverse side of the coin showcases a scenic maritime landscape designed by Donna Weaver. It depicts the historic Pemaquid Point lighthouse perched atop a rugged granite coastline, while a sailboat glides across the open sea in the distance. Above the scene, the state name and the year 1820, marking Maine's admission to the Union, are clearly inscribed. Below, the year of issue, 2003, is paired with the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. On the obverse, the classic profile of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan, faces left. This side bears the familiar inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR and the S mint mark, indicating its origin in San Francisco.
