On the reverse, designed by John Mercanti, the coin depicts a pivotal moment in American exploration. It portrays Meriwether Lewis and William Clark navigating the Mississippi River on their return journey to St. Louis. Rising in the background is the iconic Gateway Arch of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. The design is inscribed with the state name, the year of its statehood (1821), the phrase Corps of Discovery, and the dates 1804 and 2004, marking the bicentennial of the historic expedition.
