The reverse of the quarter honors the legendary westward exploration of the American continent. It depicts the historic return of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark as they navigate the Mississippi River back to St. Louis. Rising in the background is the majestic Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Gateway Arch, symbolizing the city's role as the gateway to the West. The design includes the inscriptions 'MISSOURI 1821', 'CORPS OF DISCOVERY 1804 2004', and the national motto 'E PLURIBUS UNUM'. On the obverse, the coin displays the classic profile of George Washington, a design originally created by John Flanagan.
