In 2004, the United States Mint released a special quarter honoring Michigan, struck at the Denver facility. This coin, preserved in brilliant uncirculated condition, features a composition of copper and nickel bonded directly to a core of pure copper. The piece brings a regional tribute to a national canvas, celebrating the geography of the Great Lakes region. The obverse displays the familiar profile of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan. Alongside the president's portrait, the inscriptions read LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination of QUARTER DOLLAR. The Denver mint mark, a small letter D, is also visible on this side. On the reverse, designed by Donna Weaver, the coin showcases a map-like outline of Michigan framed by the Great Lakes system. The design highlights the state's unique geography, accompanied by the inscriptions MICHIGAN, GREAT LAKES STATE, and the year of issue, 2004, alongside the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM.
